Biografie

Biography

The chamber choir Singkronies (the name "Singkronies" refers to the goal to be synchronized in voice, as well as to sing 'chronically' (continuously). It is a mixed chamber choir of about 30 members. The choir members are mainly former choir members of one of the various university choirs. The quality of the voices, and the musicality of the choir members were scrupulously judged and no compromise was made in this regard. The members accommodate frequent practice and performances besides their professional obligations, which emphasizes a commitment to the choir by its members.

The choir is unique in the sense that it is primarily a project choir and that it operates independently from any institution. The choir has tasked itself to make a positive contribution to the archive of South African choir music. This is accomplished by doing performances and CD recordings (see www.singkronies.co.za/cdopnames.htm) of prominent South African choir somposers. These recordings have to be comparable technically and musically to the best globally. Due to a superficiality that has become common place in church music, there is a growing desire among music lovers to seek a return to a more serious church music genre. Singkronies tries to address this need.

Singkronies Chamber Choir has since made five CD recordings. In its relatively short existence, the choir has become well known in South Africa and abroad. This was underscored with the choir's participation in the Finnish International Choir Fest in 1998, when the Finnish choir critics described the choir and choir leader as "outstanding quality".
